October is Menopause Awareness Month, a good moment to look at what menopause costs employers, because most of that cost never shows up where you’d expect.
Most employers assume menopause is covered. Women have an OB/GYN, primary care, behavioral health, and maybe a dedicated benefit. That assumption misses something.
A woman in menopause may seek help for sleeplessness, anxiety, pain, or brain fog from different providers, each visit landing separately in the claims. Few of these appear under a line labeled menopause, though the symptoms are estimated to cost some $26 billion a year nationally.
The workforce cost compounds it. In a survey by the Society for Women’s Health Research, one in four women considered leaving or left the workforce because of menopause, carrying retention and replacement costs most plans never trace to the source.
The spend is real but scattered across providers and claims, which makes it hard to see and harder to manage. Employers are often already paying, with no way to tell whether it is helping women get better.
Sword Women’s Health connects that care. A Women’s Health Specialist guides clinical decisions while Phoenix, our AI Care Specialist, carries each woman’s history forward, so she does not start over every time something changes.
And it shows up where benefits teams can underwrite it. In a claims-based analysis of more than 42,000 matched commercial members, with methodology independently reviewed by Milliman, the program delivered a 3.2x gross ROI and $2,484 saved per member.
